Integrating scientific guidance into marine spatial planning.
Marine spatial planning (MSP), whereby areas of the ocean are zoned for different uses, has great potential to reduce or eliminate conflicts between competing management goals, but only if strategically applied. The recent literature overwhelmingly agrees that including stakeholders in these planning processes is critical to success; but, given the countless alternative ways even simple spatial...
متن کاملBuilding a Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure to Support Marine Spatial Planning in U.s. Waters
Marine spatial planning (MSP) is emerging as a practical process to help achieve the ecological, economic, and societal objectives of U.S. ocean management. Coastal and ocean data have unique challenges that need to be addressed. Ambulatory boundaries, 4-D data needs, and difficulty acquiring these data in the marine environment are some of the challenges not traditionally faced by land-based p...
متن کاملDecision-Theoretic Planning of Navigation Instructions: Theoretical and Practical Aspects
We describe a decision-theoretic approach to providing user oriented and resource-adapted navigation instructions within buildings. Although information is broadcast by infrared senders in a unidirectional manner, we found it possible to treat the problem of assigning each sender both a user-oriented and resource-adapted broadcast program as a fully observable Markov decision problem.
متن کاملTheoretical review and Planning process of the Relation between Environment, Spatial Justice and Urban Governance
The concept of spatial justice has been widely employed in the recent literature that attempts to deal with concepts and practices of justice from a geographical perspective. However, the concept of spatial justice needs to be recast. Spatial justice could be the most radical offspring of law’s ‘spatial turn’. Spatial justice is arguably the most promising platform on which to redefine, not o...
متن کاملMapping cumulative noise from shipping to inform marine spatial planning.
Including ocean noise in marine spatial planning requires predictions of noise levels on large spatiotemporal scales. Based on a simple sound transmission model and ship track data (Automatic Identification System, AIS), cumulative underwater acoustic energy from shipping was mapped throughout 2008 in the west Canadian Exclusive Economic Zone, showing high noise levels in critical habitats for ...
